So many landscapes here in Venice with lawn care companies who really dont have a clew about what they are doing.  Cutting turf too often, or too short, not fertilizing with proper nutrients, most have no education when it comes to irrigation systems and water requirements of plants and turf.  Here are some tips when hiring a Venice lawn care Company 1.  Make sure they are a licensed Sarasota landscape company 2. Make sure they are a certified Sarasota Best Mangement Practices program company.  3. Make sure they are experienced in Sarasota irrigation reapair and good watering practices. 4. Most of all make sure thier personaity is one you can communicate with, so many landscape companies are not willing to educate thier client, or communicate.  5. Understand your agreement, when will they fertilize, trim shrubs, mulch property and run irrigation.  Visit our web site www.stateofthartlandscaping for more information.

Fertilizing your sarasota landscape is a real challenge.  So many practices work in your neighbors yard that do not work in your own yad.  I find turf in Sarasota is especially hard to get to respond to fertilizer.  One thing that is very important is patients.  It takes time to turn a yard around, and it can get very expensive.  I am a proponet of getting rid of most turf and installing Sarasota Native plants and palms that dont need any where near the fertilizers and pesticides and not to mention water requirements that turf does.  I have installed E.Z flow fertigation systems on several of my accounts and it works much better than spreading granule fertilizer, many factors have to be present to activate fertilizer, such as moisture, heat, not too little not too much of either.  With Sarasota E.Z. Flow systems all this is eliminated, every time you water small doses of fertilizer is fed to your turf and landascape which plants and turf absorb, there is no run off no pollution, and the plants become healthier, requiring less water and less pest problems as a result.

Turf management practices for proper care of your Sarasota Turf starts with proper mowing hieghts.  So many companies that care for turf mow weekly, this is a big mistake, mowing should be based on growth rate of the grass not the calendar.  Also change pattern of mowing each week, this reduces stress on turf.  Making sure the blade of the mower is sharp helps keep stress down also.  St. Augustine in Sarasota needs all good management practices especially in Summer.  Make sure the turf is cut at proper hieghts.  3.5″ to 4″ I find to work best, yes there are companies that cut shorter but this increases water and fertilization to keep green and healthy, which we all know in Sarasota and in this entire south west region water can not be wasted and fertilizer polutes our water supplies and the Gulf Of Mexico.  For more information visit our web site or contact Sarasota extension services, there is good information and its free.

When planning a landscape in Venice Florida water thirsty turf is out.  Sure its a nice accent in small areas, just make sure that the turf is easily accessable by mowers, will not need string trimmers to manicure, String trimmers promote scalping which in turn causes problems.  Make sure that all plant material has some salt tolerance, all wells in Venice are experiencing salt water intrusion, and the problem will only get worse.  When planning your landscape in Venice take a look at native plants such as Coontie Palm, Dwarf palmetto Sabal minor, Buccaneer Palm, and many other palms and plants that will live with no irrigation after establishing in thier new environment.

Im glad I have associates that really care about our enviroment, I say that because waht we have talked about for years now is coming true, in the way of water pollution, salt water intrusion in our wells, pesticides that are ruining entire friendly insects.  Landscaping in Venice Florida is more than just alot of water hungry turf, which is going to be limited because the water supply is just about over.  In Venice Golf and Country Club here in Venice salt water has entered the water supply for the Golf Course, every house is irrigated and just about every house over waters.  Even when its very clear that over watering is not good for any one and promotes weeds, and makes plants and turf more suceptable to drought they still jack the times up to 60 minutes a zone.  When hiring a landscaper in Venice make sure they use water saving plant material, using shade trees will also reduce water requirements.  take your turf to its limits then water it, this will acclimate it to drought conditions.  We must all work together on our Sarasota landscape practices our enviroment wont last long if we keep abusing it.

Well just finished another beautiful landscape here in Saraota Florida.  What we did was take hard to manage St. Augustine grass and replaced it with low maintenance plant material which not only will take very little water, fertilizer, and pesticides once established, it looks so much better. Our Sarasota plant selection was Coontie palms, Adonidia Palms, Beach sunflower, Bird of Paradise and large boulders, all drought tolerant Sarasota plants.  I love using boulders in landscapes, not only does it adds a nice contrast to the look of the landscape, but no maintenance, no water, and no fertilizer.  I wish every one practiced landscaping with native and or low maintence plant material, our water shortages and polluting of our water ways with fertilizers and pesticides is the reason we should all pracitice best mangement practices when designing our landscapes in Sarasota, look on the web for more information, remove water consuming grasses and replace with natives plants.
