Venice landscape maintenance this time of year is when you really have to keep a good eye on your landscape and turf in Venice.  This warm and moist weather not only makes the grass grow rapidly, but promotes fungus and those hated chinch bugs.  Keeping your lawn fertilized properly and applying pest control will help but thats not a guarantee.  Here are some tips that will help you keep yur lawn looking good and pest free.  first of all do not over irrigate, this promostes fungus and weeds such as dollar weed, watering one time per week applying 3/4″ to 1″ of water will keep your turf looking good, also turn off zones that only water plants, they will live off of mother nature.  Remember no fertilizer in Sarasota starting June 1st through Sept. 31.  Applying pest control should be done sparingly, only apply if needed and then only treat area that has insects present, moniter and re apply if needed.  For more information visit www.stateoftheartlandscaping.com

Hope you were able to read the tribunes article A Meadow Beneath The Waves in this sundays Sarasota Herald Tribune.  It seems we are turning the corner in our water quality, I am an avid boater and I see it much cleaner than in years past.  It is a fact that Sarasota Home Fertilizers were the biggest factor in poor water quality because of high nitrogen content, improper application and applying fertilizer too close th the waters edge.  As I ride up and down the intercoastal water way I see green grass all the way to the waters edge, some Sarasota Home Owners install a buffer between the grass and the water, this usually includes salt tolerant plant material which filters the nitrogen, phosphate and pesticides before it gets in the water, this type of Sarasota landscape buffer is critical to our water quality.  As the article in the Sarsota Herald states,we have gained 2700 acres of sea grass that is vital to our water quality and fish habitat, clearity of water is better, and the fishing is the best its been in years.  So please be a responsible Sarasota Home owner, make sure your Sarasota fertilizer applicater is using the responsible techniques when applying, using a deflector, staying ten feet away from the waters edge and if you dont have a Sarasota landscape buffer start installing one.

Landscaping with drought tolerant landscape material her in Sarasota is even more important than ever.  Yes we had rain today and it seems like all the lakes and ponds are filling up, but the ground water is at a deficit we cant catch up with.  Shade trees in Sarasota are in my opinion the most important aspect of landscapeing, this gives you the oportunity to create shade for a more lush landscape and not have to use Sarasota’s sprinkler systems to water ill planned landscaping. Trees such as Gumbo Limbo, Several of the Oak tree family, Coconut Palms, Royal Ponciana, and many more grow rather fast and give us that much needed shade in our hot summer months. For better idieas go to our web site and visit the links,

Finally we are getting rain.  We need alot more and lets hope we get it.  Irrigation systems in Venice are struggling to keep up and its depleting our water supply.  Here are some tips on how to help your lawn through tese up coming summer months. Make sure you cut your Venice turf as high as possible.  St. Augustine grass should be cut at 4.5″ in summer, let your grass grow as high as 7″ before cutting, this will protect your grass fron hot summer afternoons.  Make sure your blades are sharp this is very important to maintain the health of the grass, dull blades do severe damage, and can lead to fungus and other problems.  Venice irrigations sytems are a necessity in keeping your landscape and turf healthy, however irrigation responsibility is of the upmost importance, please keep your irrigation system in good running order.  Check your sprinkler system one time per month checking for leaks, and other problems, remember every drop counts.  When trimming shrubs try to keep the growth characteristics of the plant in mind the more you altar this the more water and care it will need.  For more information on landscape care in Sarasota, Venice visit our web site at www.stateoftheartlandscaping.com

Here in Venice Florida, irrigation wells are running short on water, many irrigation pumps in Venice sitting fifty feet in the ground are running short on water. In the last week I have dropped three and have three more scheduled.  I know if we dont get rain soon this will continue.  Plant material in Venice seems to be holding on, turf such as St. Augustine are turning to toast, thats ironic because the turf uses the most water, this is a mission of mine, to reduce the amount of turf we have here in Venice and Sarasota.  If removing turf is not in your budget atleast plant a Sarasota Shade Tree shade can take the place of thaousands of gallons of irrigation water.  We must take this drought more seriously, running out of water when we dont have to is down right stupid.  For more information contact www.watermatters.org

Landscaping in Venice has come a long way since our early settlers such as the Palmers and Blackburns arrived here many years ago.  In some ways I wish we would have left it all natural Florida Native plants.  So many species of plants we have brought into our environment that have caused severe damage to  Floridas Native trees, plants and flowers. One thing I have come to a conclusion on is that we must get rid of water thirsty turf, our water table has fallen to the point of no getting it back to safe levals at this point.  Salt water intrusion is a fact of life in our fresh water wells here in South West Florida.  Mostly from over watering our existing landscapes, the waste of fresh water has been rampid.  Here are tips on saving water in your landscape.  First of all establish a good shade canopy so that what ever you plant under canopy will not need as much water as plants or turf in the hot Florida sun.  I think that establishing a canopy back over our cities and towns is the most important thing we can do to start down the road of responsible landscaping, Make sure if you install an irrigation system in Venice that it is of sound irrigation principles, beware of irrigation contractors in Venice that give you a price that is way below other contractors there is nothing cheap about irrigations systems, to save money do it your self but plan your landsdcaping first and then your irrigation system, therte are many good books and your Sarasota county extension service will be a great information source.  Plant drought tolerant plant material.  so many tips on this is readily available on www.stateoftheartlandscaping.com pleawse visit our web site or give us a call 941 492-2468
