Just got back from the lower Florida Keys, saw some really well done landscapes, most interesting of all was its all done on very low water volume, hardly any turf to speak of, when we got off the interstate here in Venice, we were shocked by all the green grass, even though we live here and had only been gone two weeks the difference was very obvious the different landscape practices. Lawn care in Venice is alot of irrigation and fertilizing of grass, as opposed to alot of Florida Native landscaping with less water and low fertilization. Turf in Venice takes far too much of our water resources, and too much fertilizer. Here is a way to turn your Venice landscape into a Florida Friendly Yard. Remove as much turf as possible, plant shade trees such as Pitch Apple, Oak, even Coconut trees give a wonderful filtered shade which cuts down on water consumption, plant drought tolerant plants.
