Here in Venice, Florida there are so many nice tropical plants to choose from that require no fertilizer.  When starting your design process take a walk around your neighborhood, take photos, the yards with the least maintenance and look the best are what you should try to achieve.  All my clients are looking for low maintenance landscapes which are achievable if you take your time to plan.  Plan your landscape in Venice with plants such as Mandevilia, Jasmine,Bogenvilia, Oleander and the list goes on, please consider more plant beds and Shade trees in Venice landscaping than large areas of St. Augustine turf.  The cost in terms of money, and harm to our fragile enviroment as far as Im concerned, are not worth it.  Coconut palms, shade trees Rubber plants, Philodendron require far less water, pest control and fertilzer and look absolutely beautiful if done right
